For those with a niche for photography or those who hope to publish their photos in today’s high-profile magazines, the ArtsRevive is offering photographers a chance to show off their skills during its annual photography contest.
With this year’s theme titled, “Through My Eyes … the Beautiful Places of Selma and Dallas County,” interested participants are urged to take photographs of the places that make Selma what it is.
ArtsRevive officials encourage interested participants to turn in their 8-by10-inch matte works to 3 Church St., beginning Thursday, Oct. 6 and Friday, Oct. 7 from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Photography contest chair Ann Thomas said last year’s contest was a success. She hopes this year’s contest will encourage people to see Selma through new lenses.
“We hope this year will have even more (participants) and we hope people will get the idea,” Thomas said. “We hope people in the community can see Selma with different eyes … see the good here.”
First through third place prizes will be awarded.
First place is $100, second place is $50 and third place winners will receive an ArtsRevive T-shirt or apron.
ArtsRevive photography contest 2010 first-place winner Ashlyn Goodwin, who is currently a student at Tuskegee University, took home the grand prize for her photo of Joe’s Bicycle Shop owner Joe Chapman. Goodwin also won first-place in 2009 for her depiction of Cleckler’s produce stand.
The contest is open to students and adults. Interested participants must send in works to the Carneal ArtsRevive building and all entries must have labels on the back of them.
Entries will be shown during the Riverfront Market Day on Oct. 15. Copyright will remain with the photographers.
