On a day where friends, family and peers were celebrating homecoming and Senior Day, the Concordia College Hornets dominated the Texas College Steers 33-3 Saturday at Memorial Stadium in their last home game of the season.
The Hornets (4-2) came out of the gate strong and never looked back.
“We got out the gate early and that was the key,” said Shepherd Skanes, head football coach of Concordia. “Once we got out the gate early, there was no looking back.”
After taking a 3-0 lead with 5:25 left in the first quarter, the Hornets would get a big play from their special teams two minutes later when Anthony Webb returned a Steers punt 60 yards for a touchdown to make the score 9-0 with 3:12 left in the quarter.
Things would really pick up in the second quarter for the Hornets, starting with a 33-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Carlos Young to receiver Cleveland Andrews to make the score 16-3 with 12:44 left in the half.
After the Steers got on the board with a field goal on the following possession, the Hornets would cap off a long drive with a 3-yard touchdown run from running back Noel Butler to make the score 24-3 after a successful two-point conversion attempt on a fake field goal with 5:49 left in the half.
A little over three minutes later the Hornets offense would strike again, as quarterback Joe Coachman found receiver Mason Tillman in the seam for a 27-yard touchdown with 2:39 left to give the Hornets a 30-3 lead going into the half.
The win not only marked the Hornets last home game of the season, but it also marked the last home game ever for Hornets seniors.
A win was a memorable way to go out.
“I’m a redshirt senior, so I’ve been here five years and I’ve worked hard,” said Hornets’ senior linebacker Cruz Forbes. “I love these guys, so to go out with a win means a lot to me.”
The Hornets have four games remaining on the season, with the next one coming Saturday against the Grambling State Tigers at 2 p.m. in Grambling, La.
