Honoring a longtime downtown business

Today, a downtown business will celebrate a milestone.
For 90 years, the Swift Drug Company has served the Selma community.
At 11 a.m. today, a ribbon cutting will be held at the Broad Street business to commemorate the event. There will be door prizes, and punch and cake will be served. In addition, a live remote will be broadcast from Swift’s all day today.
William Pope Swift III, “Buddy,” is the third generation of the Swift Drug Company family.
Swift’s was started by George A. Swift in 1909, after he had received his pharmacy license.
From a soda fountain to curb service to nighttime hours, Swift’s has undergone changes as the family business has grown with Selma.
Through the almost 100 years that Swift has served the people of Selma, life has passed daily by its front doors.
Buddy Swift said he believes “one of the fortunate things of being part of Swift’s is knowing everybody in town. It is a blessing to spend most of your life right here.”
He added that the business
– along with a handful of others – has been active in keeping downtown viable through the years.
We congratulate the Swift Drug Company on its 90th year celebration, and look forward to the business being a part of downtown Selma for many years to come.
