Alma Jean Olds Griffin

Alma Jean Olds Griffin of Savannah, Georgia, formerly of Selma, passed away Tuesday, September 12, 2006.

She was 64-years-old.

She received her bachelor’s degree in education and her master’s degree in counseling from Livingston University.

She retired from the Dallas County School System and also from the Georgia School System.

Survivors include her sons John Phillip Griffin of Montgomery and William Byrd Griffin, Jr. (Mary) of Guyton, Georgia; sisters, Sylvia (David) Carter of Sautee, Georgia, Josephine Smith of Monroeville, Alabama, Gwen (Roy) Cook of Durango, Colorado and Margaret (Harold) Wells of Valley Grande, Alabama; brothers Clyde (Cappie) Olds of Sealy, Texas, Charles (Jacqueline) Olds of Largo, Florida and Malcolm (Cindy) Olds of Morgan City, Louisiana; two grandchildren, Thomas and Kelsey Griffin of Guyton, Georgia and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William Byrd Griffin, Sr. and her parents, Linnie and Clyde Olds.

Graveside memorial services will be Saturday, September 23, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. at Shiloh Baptist Church cemetery, 5441 Alabama Hwy.41, Sardis, Alabama.

Mary Ann Olverson Stoutemire

Ms. Mary Ann Olverson Stoutemire, age 68, of Cincinnati, OH, formerly of Selma, AL, died on September 15, 2006 at her home in Cincinnati, OH.

Funeral services will be announced at a later date by Miller Funeral Service.

Ola Glass Dyson

Ola Glass Dyson, age 88, of Lamison, AL, passed on Sunday, September 17, 2006 at Marengo Nursing Home in Linden, AL. She was born June 25, 1918 in Octagon, AL and was a homemaker.

Visitation will be at O’Bryant Chapel Funeral Home on Tuesday, September 19, 2006 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 p.m.

Funeral services will be held at O’Bryant Chapel Funeral Home on Wednesday, September 20, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Tony Cannon and Rev. Mickey Green officiating. Burial will be at New Octagon Cemetery in Linden, AL.

She is survived by her son, Carl “Johnny” (Eva) Dyson, Jr. – Saraland, AL; daughters, Nell (Jerry) Ramer- Omaha, NE and Peggy Ward – Linden, AL; sister, Mildred (Buddy) Foxhall – Linden, AL; 12 grandchildren, 34 great grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, and special friends.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Carl Dyson, Sr. and son, Charles “Hot” Dyson.

Parthenia Alexander

Parthenia Alexander, age 61, of Selma, Alabama died on September 17, 2006 at Vaughan Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services and survivors will be announced at a later date by Miller Funeral Service.

Mary Julia Steele Bewig

Mary Julia Steele Bewig, age 95 of Tallassee, formerly of Selma died peacefully on Tuesday, September 19, 2006 in Tallassee.

Graveside services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday September 23, 2006 in New Live Oak Cemetery officiated by Dr. Ronald Eugene Stone and directed by Lawrence Brown-Service Funeral Home.

She was the only daughter of Felix Gideon and Mary Steele. She was predeceased by her husband, George, and her brothers, Felix, Charles, Frank (Jelly), Hugh, and James and sisters-in-law, Dean, Aline, and Dorothy.

She deeply loved her family and helped care for them in her unselfish and devoted manner as they faced illness and death.

It was her joy and love for them that made her home the gathering place on all holidays, where she took great pride and pleasure in preparing the meals.

She loved her church, the First Presbyterian, and was an active member and supporter for many years especially enjoying the Business Women’s Circle.

She was the epitome of the perfect southern lady – kind, gracious, sincere, good and thoughtful.

She graduated from Judson College, went to Montgomery to work for the State of Alabama, then moved to the country of Panama to work for the federal government. She met her future husband, George, who was working as an electrical engineer there.

They married and settled in Selma where George took over the family jewelry business and Mary Julia headed the Selective Service Office. When the draft was abolished in 1971, she retired.

Her church, family and bi-weekly bridge sessions kept her active.

She is survived by her sister-in-law, Lee Olive Steele of Andalusia, nieces, Rivars Jackson (Pink) of Fairhope, Cristy Herndon (Norm) of Montgomery, Laney Thompson (Dennis) of Austin, TX, and nephews, Felix Steele (Cathie) of Pinetop, AZ, Bill Steele (Mary) of Tucson, AZ, Grand nieces and nephews include Sam Jackson, Julie (Craig) Morgan, Tom (Traci) Herndon, Tim (Beth) Herndon, Will Thompson, Tyler Steele, Megan Steele, and Felix Steele IV. Great nieces and nephews include Brooke and Carter Morgan, Abbey and Aaron Ward, Dean and Rebecca Herndon.
