In the midst of a winless season, the young Dallas County Hornets football team is looking to gain experience and find something positive to build on going into Friday’s game.

The Hornets (0-8, 0-6) will be home at Martin Field when they play the Sumter Central Jaguars (6-2, 4-2) Friday at 7 p.m.

Hornets’ head football coach Willie Moore said Sumter Central is a tough opponent that poses a tall challenge for his team.

“On film, Sumter Central is very good,” Moore said.

“They’re one of the top four teams in our region. They’ve got a University of Alabama commit on their team (defensive tackle Darren Lake). They’re very big and physical. They fly to the ball really well.”

Moore said the Jaguars talent isn’t just on defense, as they feature a number of weapons on offense, too.

“Their receivers are 6 foot 3 and 6 foot 4, and the smaller receivers they have are very fast and quick,” Moore said.

Moore said the focus this week is to try and establish a strong rushing attack in order to limit the number of possessions the Jaguar offense gets.

“What we’ve done, we have talked about making sure our kids are able to line up, and we’re going to see if we can play power football this week to see if we can give ourselves a better chance of winning by giving them fewer possessions,” Moore said.

One thing the Hornets are doing in practice is trying to get some of their more inexperienced players some experience.

“We’re just focusing on trying to get some of the kids a few more reps than they’ve been accustomed to getting,” Moore said.

“We’ll have some new kids in the lineup this week and hopefully we’ll see exactly where they are and what they need to work on going forward into next year.”
