On Oct. 29, the Selma Police Department will again partner with the Drug Enforcement Agency for a national Take Back Day.

According to the U.S Department of Justice, previous events have been an overwhelming success.

According to Selma Police Department Sgt. Kenta Fulford, the fall event will have dropoff locations at Walmart and the Selma Police Department from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and citizens are encouraged to bring in all of their out of date medications.

Some medications, he said, will have special requirements..

“If it is a liquid, it needs to be sealed in a ziplock bag and they can just drop it off,” he said.

The Drug Enforcement Agency said the Take Back Days a re a great opportunity to remove narcotics from homes that could be abused and deadly.

“This is a great opportunity for those who missed the first event or who have subsequently accumulated unwanted, unused prescription drugs, to safely dispose of them,” a release from the Department of Justice said.

This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue.  More than 7 million Americans currently abuse prescription drugs, according to the 2009 Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration’s National Survey on Drug Use and Health.
