Two men believed to be responsible for thefts involving the Selma Food Bank were taken into custody late Tuesday afternoon.
Herbert Walker, 21, and Kenyall Callens, 22, were arrested on multiple charges after what Selma Chief of Police William T. Riley called a thorough investigation that connected both to a rash of recent crimes.
“During the investigation we were trying to compile some cases together for recent burglaries and some similarities came up,” he said. “The guys’ names came up as suspects, and interviews were conducted by detectives and from the interviews both suspects confessed to their part.”
Walker has been charged with two counts of receiving stolen property in reference to burglaries that occurred on Sept. 8 and Oct. 25 at Kelly Foods, as well as two counts from a Sept. 21 and Oct. 26 incident at the Food Bank.
Callens faces similar charges, though he was not charged in the Oct. 26 incident.
Walker had been arrested only a week ago on a burglary charge that involved stolen property from Bracken Construction Company at 626 Medical Center Parkway.
“When his name came up again, the detectives interviewed him and Callens and they confessed,” Riley said.
With two people in custody, Riley said he has not ruled out the possibility of more charges or arrests.
“The investigation is still open,” he said. “We are still pursuing some leads in the investigation. Even though they have confessed to these crimes we are still investigating if there are other burglaries these individuals might have been involved in.”
Both Walker and Callens listed Selma addresses.
Riley encouraged the public to keep an eye out for other offenders.
“We still want the citizens to be on guard for anyone strange they see out there in their neighborhoods,” he said. “Day or night, we want them to call us.”
