Mistletoe, reindeer with big red noses, parades and claymation classics of the Holiday season, all point to one thing: Christmas. And nothing means Christmas more than spending it with family and friends.
The city of Selma wants you to be “Home for the Holidays” this Christmas season for its annual Selma-Dallas County Christmas Parade Saturday, Dec. 3 at 9 a.m. on Broad Street. The festivities will include floats, music and of course an appearance from Santa Claus.
Selma-Dallas County Chamber of Commerce executive director Sheryl Smedley said this year’s parade, which will begin at the foot of the Edmund Pettus Bridge, will allow the public to see new additions to Selma.
“The (Selma) Interpretive Center before was under construction,” Smedley said. “You’ll see a facelift to our downtown beginning with the Interpretive Center. Of all the renovations in 2011 — the river walk, Phoenix Park, The Coffee Shoppe, Taco Bell, we want people to bring their families and friends home for the holidays to see our new Selma.”
And with all kinds of things available for the public to view, Smedley said, she encourages all who desire to participate in the parade to sign up.
“We encourage all citizens to come out, and the participation of organizations is encouraged,” Smedley said. “It’s a fun and exciting time of the year.”
Interested participants must fill out a form of registration and return it to the Chamber of Commerce at 912 Selma Ave. by Tuesday, Nov. 22. Late registration will be taken up until Nov. 29 by noon but entry fees will double.
Fees include the following: floats $20 per entry, motorized vehicles $15 per entry, $10 for each emergency vehicle, motorcycle, bicycle and horse. Drivers must bring a copy of valid driver’s license, proof of current insurance, tag number, make and model of vehicle. Applications will not be accepted without all required documents attached. Line up for the parade starts at 8 a.m., and individuals must pick a number in order to participate.
