For 75 years the annual Iron Bowl has been a long lasting tradition between two rival teams Auburn Tigers and the Alabama Crimson Tide. Whatever team you’re passionate about you can watch the two teams collide on the big screen this Saturday.

Sponsored by Selma Mayor George Evans and the Selma City Council, the “Iron Bowl Watch Party,” will begin at 2:30 p.m. inside the Larry D. Striplin Performing Arts Center and will offer refreshments and snacks. Doors open at 1:30 p.m.

Evans said the free event, which is a first, is a good time of fellowship for all residents of Selma.

“I think it’s a good start,” Evans said. “I’m looking forward to it — and we think it’s a good time for people to come together. It’s another way of extending one family, football wise … show love.”

Ward 4 Councilwoman Angela Benjamin, who helped to coordinate the event, said she expects the public to have a “good ‘ol friendly rivalry of a time,” especially for those who will not attend the big game.

“Doors open an hour early so they can fellowship and talk some friendly smack,” Benjamin said, chuckling. “This is our first time ever (doing this) and we hope everyone comes. I’m very, very excited — I’m really amped. I’m always excited about bowl parties.”

Benjamin said everything has been tested inside the center to prepare for the event.

“It will be on the big screen — we’re expecting the new screen, for the movie theatre, on Tuesday. We’ll have wings, pizza — usual football stuff.”

The event, Benjamin said, is open to the public.

“Anybody who wants to invite friends they can do so on Facebook,” Benjamin said.

“Be sure to wear your team gear.”
